Editorial Work
I served as the editor of a historical journal and of two book series during my career. From 1982 to 1988, I served as the editor of Prologue, Quarterly of the National Archives. In 1988, I served as the editor of “The Heritage of American Catholicism,” 28-volume series of original publications from the Garland Publishing Company. In 1990, with Edward R. Kantowicz, I edited the “European Immigrants in American Society” another 28-volume series of original publications from Garland Publishing Company.
Journal Articles
I have published more than fifty articles and essays in two dozen professional and scholarly journals. These publications focus on topics reflected in the book titles above. Among the journals and magazines that have published my articles are: Notre Dame Magazine, College and Research Libraries, Momentum, Catholic Education, Government Information Quarterly, Catholic Historical Review, Catechist, Prologue, Religious Education, The American Archivist, Today’s Catholic Teacher, History of Education Quarterly and the U.S. Catholic Historian.
Encyclopedia Entries
I have published more than three dozen entries in more than a dozen encyclopedias including the following: Encyclopedia of Education in the United States (2002), World Book Encyclopedia (2002), Encyclopedia of American Political History (2001), Encyclopedia of Catholic Schools in the United States (2004), Funk and Wagnall’s New Encyclopedia (1983); Modern Catholic Encyclopedia (2004), Encyclopedia of American Catholic History (1996), American National Biography (1999), Encyclopedia of the Midwest (2006), Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science (2003), Encyclopedia of New York State (2006), Encarta (1993), Encyclopedia of the Irish in America (1999) and the Historical Dictionary of the Gilded Age (2001).

I have published reviews of more than four dozen books over the past 30 years. Among the journals that have published my reviews are: Choice, Journal of American History, Catholic Education, American Historical Review, Nebraska History, The American Archivist, Catholic Historical Review, International Migration Review, U.S. Catholic Historian, The New World, Wisconsin Magazine of History, History of Education Quarterly, and the Journal of Illinois History among others.
Media Appearances
I have been widely quoted as an authority on the history of the presidency and the vice presidency. My quotes have appeared in USA Today, Chicago Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Los Angeles Times and, via the Associated Press, in many other major newspapers across the country. In addition, I have appeared as a commentator on every major cable new channel in the United States including CNN, MS-NBC, Fox News Channel, and C-SPAN. I also have appeared on the History Channel and on Australian National Television.
Professional and Community Service
I hold or have held a number of leadership positions in professional and community organizations. Endowed Lectures
I have been invited to give three endowed lectures in my career. In 1999, I gave the Joseph Rogus Lecture at the University of Dayton. In 2000, I presented the Frank and Lucille Williams Lecture at the Louisiana State University at Shreveport. In 2003, I delivered a lecture at the Mark O. Hatfield Distinguished Historians Forum at the Oregon Historical Society.
Honors and Awards
Over the past thirty years, both as an individual and as an administrator, I have received a number of awards and honors from a variety of state and national organization including: the State Historical Society of Iowa, the U.S. Catholic Press Association, the National Archives and Records Administration, the U.S. General Services Administration, the National Association of Government Communicators, the State of Iowa, the Order of Preachers (Dominican Sisters), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Teachers College at Columbia University.
