Doing Business Globally--A General Guide

  • Bureau of Economic Analysis -- U.S. government. Click here for International Economic Accounts
  • Business Planet -- " features more than 20 maps that cover over 190 economies across issues like How easy it is to do business, How often firms are expected to bribe tax inspectors, and much more. You can filter maps by various topics, regions and countries and share a link with your colleagues through a toolbar at the top right corner."
  • Corporate Information -- company profiles, industry profiles, and annotated links to businesses in Canada, Mexico and other countries. Slow to load.
  • Doing Business --  from WorldBank Group, this website provides objective measures of business regulations for 130 countries.  Includes costs of starting a business, hiring workers, getting credit, etc.Interactive.
  • Embassies in Washington DC -- includes links to information about the business culture in each country
  • European Industrial Relations Observatory Online -- offers current information and analysis relating to industrial relations in 15 countries.
  • Executive Planet -- information on acceptable public conduct, attire, forms of address, etc. arranged by country.
  • Export Statistics Express -- provides ability to draw maps of global distribution of U.S. or a State's exports
  • FITA Web Resources for International Trade -- information on trade shows, export/import, foreign banks, trade statistics, international trade associations.
  • Foreign Direct Investment in the United States -- index to report prepared by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, includes charts and graphs.  in .pdf.
  • Global Edge--includes news, journals, articles, research reports, statistics, country data, and more.
  • ICMA International -- "has successfully designed, implemented and evaluated more than 500 international projects, establishing a solid reputation for its practical, hands-on approach to meeting global challenges with local solutions." Be sure to look at the site menu on left too.
  • International Banking Law--with links to various national banks, treaties, etc.
  • International Business Kiosk-- Useful information for the business traveler abroad.
  • International Economic Trends -- from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, this report has economic trends on Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

  • International Trade Administration -- from the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, this site includes FAQs, country information, tariff & tax information, NAFTA, and industry information. Check out the blue menu bar along the upper page.
  • International Trade Law Project-- information on treaties, dispute resolution, customs, intellectual property protection, insurance, etc. Searchable.
  • the Internationalist--bills itself as a comprehensive source for international business information.
  • MBendi--a one-stop resource for business and commercial information about Africa.
  • Minimum Wages in Europe -- a document discussing minimum wages in several European countries.
  • OPIC: Overseas Private Investment Corporation -- guides and handbooks online.

  • Universal Currency Converter-- How many pounds, zlotys, lira, to your dollar and vice versa?
  • U.S. Agency for International Development -- use the "search" box to locate information on specific countries. Information includes economic profile, labor market information, outlook for industry growth.
  • US Department of State Country Commercial Guides -- reports prepared by US Dept. of State on foreign countries' trade practices, US investments, economic indicators. Includes reports on such issues as worker rights, protection of intellectual property, barriers to US exports, export subsidies, etc.
  • U.S. Foreign Trade Statistics -- from the Census Bureau.  Includes current and historical statistics.
  • U.S. Trade Representative--contains texts of various treaties and agreements.

This utility should help you find a convenient time, so that no one has to be up during the middle of the night."
