Resources for Reporters

  • Bibliography on the Freedom of Information Act, 1980-2004 -- links and books.
  • Business Journalist Resources
  • Covering Climate Change Course --"Click enroll to register (free, fast and easy),  and you'll be in. The course features text, graphics, interactive activities, a video or two, and other features. It's intended for journalists, but anyone who wants to get up to speed on climate science and/or policy will get good info."
  • Journalism Net--besides key fact-checking resources, note the sections on media ethics, computer-assisted reporting, Freedom of Information Act, etc.
  • Journalists Guide to Economic Terms
  • Muckety - Exploring the paths of power and influence -- "Most of the people in our database don’t publish profiles of their various business, nonprofit and political affiliations. We list top government and political figures, as well as board members of Fortune 1000 companies, major nonprofits and influential colleges. We show lobbyists, campaign contributions and family relationships of the famous and influential, along with the infamous and criminally charged. We also profile Hollywood celebs and pop culture icons. Occasionally, we map fictional characters such as Harry Potter."
  • Newspaper Index -- websites of newspapers from all over the world. It often has an English language edition too, but you may need to BabelFish it.
  • Polling Report -- covers all the news polls for many areas. Excellent!
  • Pulitzer Prizes-- texts of this years' Pulitzer Award-winning stories
  • Religion Writers   --- resources for reporters
  • The Revealer: A Daily Review of Religion and the Press -- Produced by the New York University Department of Journalism and New York University's Center for Religion and Media, who aim "to develop and broaden scholarship, pedagogy, and public knowledge of religion and media, in all their forms." Includes articles, an archive, discussions, and links to the religious media and media about religion. A useful supplement to news media that too often ignore religion.
  • the Slot: Copy Editor's Style Guide
  • Statistics Every Writer Should Know-- do you really understand what is meant by mean? median? standard deviation? Margin of error? If not, be sure to check out this site.
  • Student Press Law Center--an "online legal clinic" for student journalists.
