General Music Resources

  • African Music Encyclopedia -- Brief entries on African musicians and some movements, searchable, and browsable by artist's name and by country; no music is available from the site. The links section provides a guide to general sources, festivals, stores, recording labels, periodicals, and lists. Very useful as far as it goes, though many planned entries are not filled in as yet. (MB)
  • All-Music Guide-- one reviewer calls this the most complete multimedia music reference.
  • ASCAP-- American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. ASCAP Clearance Express database is searchable by author, title, composer, publisher, performer.
  • BMI-- the other royalty clearance house.
  • Center for the History of Music Theory and Literature -- from the School of Music at Indiana University, this site includes Doctoral Dissertations in Musicology Online, Musical Borrowing Bibliography, Thesaurus Musicarum Latinarum and Saggi Musicali Italiani
  • ChoralNet -- "A central portal to online resources and communications for the global choral music community." Includes a choir directory, reference materials, info on repertoire, rehearsal, performance, church music, and lots more.
  • ChoralWiki Public Domain Library -- .pdf files of free sheet music.
  • Copying under Copyright -- outline is intended to be a guide to the major requirements of the Copyright Law as they apply to users of printed music, to inform them so that they may maintain proper standards of ethics, and help protect themselves, their schools, colleges and organizations from incurring liability or subjecting themselves to the possibility of being sued.
  • Digital Scores -- rare and unique scores from Harvard University
  • Encyclopedia of Music in Canada -- searchable.
  • Festival Finder--find music festivals in North America by date, location, artist, festival name.
  • Folk Music of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and America -- includes tunes, lyrics, and historical background.
  • Free Sheet Music -- will need Adobe Reader (free) to look at music and to print it out.
  • Great German Composers  -- from the University of Virginia Library, this site offers information on individual composers
  • Great Italian and French Composers -- UVA, full text
  • Historic American Sheet Music 1850-1920 -- Created by Duke University Digital Scriptorium, this site includes digitized images of over 3,000 pieces of sheet music.  Database is searchable.  Clicking on the image of the cover brings up the score and lyrics.
  • Internet Resources for Music Scholars--from Harvard, a carefully chosen selective list of sites. Choose an appropriate guide from the list and once you click on it look for a tab for websites or internet resources.
  • IMSLP/Petrucci Music Library -- library of free sheet music online
  • Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music --It contains over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960. All pieces of the collection are indexed on this site and a search will retrieve a catalog description of the pieces. An image of the cover and each page of music will also be retrieved if the music was published before 1923 and is in the public domain.
  • Memory of the World -- sponsored by UNESCO, this website offers access to digitized collections from around the world.
  • midomi -- A web service aiming to help with one of the hardest questions: identifying an unknown song when you only know the tune. Hum it into your microphone, play it on your keyboard, or, if you think you know the artist, search its catalog of song samples.
  • Museum of Musical Instruments -- The MoMI encompasses a multifaceted mixture of history and design expressed through instruments, artists, and their music.

  • RockWisdom Song Quotes -- search for a good quote or lyric.
