Ordinary People Making the World a Better Place

  • Ashoka--a foundation dedicated to finding and supporting "social entrepreneurs"--people who are problem solvers, with both good ideas and the ability to put them in place.
  • Chemical Scorecard--a wonderful interactive source from the Environmental Defense Fund allows you to type in your zip code and find out what companies are dumping how much of what chemical contaminants, what health effects, if known, these chemicals have, and how your county compares with other counties in the state. It also includes a form for faxing your questions or complaints directly to the companies.
  • Churches at Work--an umbrella organization for church programs helping the poor become self-sufficient. Enables churches to share their good ideas.
  • Civic Practices Network--look here to see case studies on community renewal. 
  • Co-Housing Network--co-housing is a movement toward multigenerational communities in which the residents are committed to looking out for each other.
  • Democracy Unlimited--an advocacy group that thinks corporations should not have greater rights than people do. 
  • Essential.Org--an umbrella page for a variety of action and advocacy groups--Center for Public Integrity, the Child Labor Coalition, Clean Water Action, Good Works, the Media Access Project, the Multinationals Resource Center
  • @grass-roots.org--"Telling the stories of the most innovative grass-roots programs." Gives state by state, or region by region links to programs, and explains the special excellence behind the programs that have won their "Johnny-Appleseed Awards."
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Institute for Global Communications (IGC)
  • Public Citizen--a group devoted to cleaner and safer energy sources, a cleaner environment, and a more open and democratic government.
