  • 33 Rebellions per Minute--Brian Block's page of music reviews
  • AskSam -- Searchable database of full-text book, speeches, transcripts and more. From DaVinci's Notebooks to the confirmation hearings of John Roberts, who is now the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Baen Free Library -- Sci-fi titles full-text online.
  • Black Issues -- African American book reviewers "devoted to covering both fiction and nonfiction books written by black authors."
  • BookBrowser--has all kinds of useful book info--reading lists, by genre, author, series, sequels, or Oprah; an "If You Like This, You Should Like These" file, and a set of about 1500 book reviews.
  • Book Reviews--Yahoo's index.
  • Booksense.com--an independent bookstore site that has reviews and recommendations and allows you to shop the independent bookstore nearest to you online. An antidote to the massive book merchandisers.

  • ChapterOne--courtesy of the Washington Post. See or search for the available first chapters of over 130 current fiction and non-fiction titles, updated weekly. Don't just take a reviewer's word for it--try it out.

  • Iowa Literary Landscape -- a bibliography of  both adult and children's fiction set in Iowa. Alphabetical by author.

  • Music Reviews--Yahoo's index.
  • National Book Critics Circle -- list of useful book and criticism sites from newspaper, magazine and online publications. The Circle also awards the National Book Awards for fiction, non-fiction, autobiography and criticism.
  • New York Review of Books--eventually this site will contain the complete archive, and will cost money. But for right now you can see this year's back issues for free.
  • New York Times Book Reviews-text of NYTBR, plus search all book reviews since 1980. Registration required.
  • New York Times Film Reviews -- arranged by genre, date, country of origin, title and critic.
  • Online Descriptions of Computer Books
  • Rough Guides to Music--an online reference manual, complete with discographies and criticism, of rock music, reggae, opera, jazz, classical, and world music
