Image Finders and All Purpose Picture Files

  • AltaVista Photo Finder--an unusually good search engine for not just photos, but art and other images.
  • Amazing Picture Machine--a search engine that finds pictures on the net for you, which also links you to major picture files that they routinely look for images in.
  • Clip Art
  • Ditto.com -- an image search engine that can be searched by category or keyword.
  • Earth Science World Image Bank -- great images of all sorts of land, sea and air-scapes. A great way to see what the textbooks in class are talking about! Searchable and Browsable.
  • Footage.Net--a searchable database of downloadable film footage on the net.
  • Getty Images -- photography, illustration and archival images, plus film clips.
  • Google Image Search -- from Google Search Engine.
  • Hillman Wonders of the World -- top 100 wonders of the world, plus the Seven Ancient Wonders too. Images and description for every listing.
  • Memory of the World -- A database of digitized collections and projects worldwide. Searchable, records give a description and direct URL. A joint project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Memory of the World Programme and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
  • Movie Tones -- historical video clips of people, places, lifestyles.  An excellent site!
  • New York Public Library Digital Gallery -- over 275,000 photographs and manuscripts digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more. Searchable and browsable.
  • PicSearch -- images or animation.
  • Sports Illustrated Pictures Online
  • WebShots -- a searchable database of tens of thousands of photos. Great resolution (and for large size, look in the community section).
