Hate Crimes and Racism

  • Causes of Hate Crimes: Economic versus Demographic -- from the American Psychological Association.

  • Civil Rights: An Overview  -- from Cornell Law School Legal Information Library. It is important to understand the rights of those who are victims of hate crime.

  • Hate Crimes Statistics -- a full report from the FBI, in .pdf format. A short list by jurisdiction  are here. It takes a while for full reports of current year to come out.

  • Hate Crimes Research and Statistics -- from the U.S. Dept. of Justice Office of Statistics

  • Hate Crimes Research Network

  • Klan Watch--the Southern Poverty Law Center, sponsor of the Teaching Tolerance program, has been reporting on hate groups and militia groups since the early 1990's, and has very complete info about them.

  • Race, Racism and the Law -- "considers race, racism and racial distinctions in the law.  It examines the role of domestic and international law in promoting and/or alleviating racism.  The site includes statutes, cases, excerpts of law review articles, annotated bibliographies and other documents related to race and racism."

  • Race: Understanding the Issue -- The Understanding the Issue section lays out the facts and policy alternatives, while the Public Opinion section offers a detailed profile of public thinking about the issue.

  • Southern Poverty Law Center -- is internationally known for its tolerance education programs, its legal victories against white supremacists and its tracking of hate groups. It publishes the document "The Year in Hate". An excellent site for researching Hate groups and crimes.

  • The "Taguba Report" on Treatment of Abu Ghraib Prisoners in Iraq

  • Tolerance.org --includes news stories on hate and tolerance, a clickable U.S. map of hate groups, a review of tolerance in American history and more.
